1) процесс, в результате которого нечто изначально целое оказывается разделённым на множество мелких частей, фрагментов (например, фрагментация дискового пространства, фрагментация IP- дейтаграммы). В случае фрагментации диска работа с файлами замедляется из-за того, что число обращений к диску возрастает; кроме того, затрудняется восстановление каталога диска при его разрушении2) в телекоммуникации - процесс разбиения пакета на части, если его первоначальный размер слишком велик для имеющихся средств передачи через сетевую среду3) в системах динамического распределения памяти - появление в пуле памяти большого количества коротких несмежных свободных блоков; при этом система не может удовлетворить запрос на выделение длинного блока, несмотря на то, что общий объём свободной памяти для этого достаточен.Syn:Англо-русский толковый словарь терминов и сокращений по ВТ, Интернету и программированию. > fragmentation

= GC"сборка мусора"выполняемая во время исполнения программы операция удаления ненужных данных и переупорядочения (объединения в более крупные) блоков динамически распределяемой памяти, необходимой для дальнейшей работы. Эта операция может выполняться средствами ОС, интерпретатора, приложения, аппаратуры - возможно, в разных их сочетаниях. Обычно запускается, когда объём свободной памяти становится меньше заранее определённого. Освобождённая память возвращается в пул свободной (доступной для распределения) памяти.
